News for February 28, 2011


Jimmy Garcia, 44, of La Junta, was arrested on February 27, 2011 at about 8:00 p.m. at the Otero County Sheriff's Office and initially charged with third degree assault, menacing, and domestic violence. Deputy Shane Baker was dispatched to an address in the 200 block of Garden in North La Junta on February 27, 2011 at about 3:00 a.m. Dispatch reported receiving a phone call that there was a verbal argument going on at that location. Upon arrival, the victim alleged that Jimmy Garcia had been drinking and that an argument ensued resulting in the victim being struck and threats made to shoot another person being made by Jimmy Garcia. A unsuccessful search was made of the area for Jimmy Garcia, who turned himself in to the Otero County Sheriff's Office later that evening.

News for February 23, 2011

Chase Catlin who resides in Pueblo, Colorado reported on February 17, 2011 at about 1:30 a.m. that his 1994 Lincoln Continental car had been stolen while parked in front of an address in the 11000 block of Highway 50 in Manzanola, Colorado. At the time that Deputy Shane Baker was taking the report from Mr. Catlin, the Rocky Ford Police Department became involved in a pursuit with a blue car in the City of Rocky Ford. Officer Randy Garrett pursued the vehicle in Rocky Ford and then broke off pursuit at Highway 71. A short time later Deputy Adam McElroy found the suspect vehicle just exiting Manzanola on Highway 207. Deputy McElroy activated is emergency lights and the vehicle fled from him and speeds of about 100 mph. A short time later Deputy McElroy broke off the pursuit. At about 5:00 a.m. that same morning Deputy Shane Baker spotted the stolen vehicle back in the driveway at the address where it was stolen from. There appeared to be no damage to the body of the car, however, an engine problem was detected by the owner. The case remains under investigation.

News for February 17, 2011


Don Hoskins, 71, of La Junta was arrested on February 14, 2011 at an address in the 25000 block of Highway 50 at about 11:30 p.m. He was initially charged with harassment with domestic violence.

Deputy Mike Martin received a call to the above address and spoke with the victim who alleged that during the previous week during an argument Don Hoskins grabbed her by the shirt and shook her. The victim then fled the home after the incident. Hoskins was arrested without incident and booked into the Otero County Jail.

A sixteen-year-old La Junta female and a fifteen-year-old La Junta female received a summons and complaint for illegal possession and consumption of ethyl alcohol by an underage person on February 16, 2011 at about 10:00 p.m. Deputy Adam McElroy was dispatched to the area of Highway 109 and Chalmers in North La Junta on the report of a one car rollover. Upon arrival at the scene he was unable to locate anyone and at about 9:45 p.m. he received a radio call that there were three intoxicated females walking over the North La Junta bridge. Deputy McElroy contacted the two females who stated to him that they were involved with the accident, but left the scene in an effort to get help. Both of the females were transported to the Sheriff's Office where they were issued summons and released to legal guardians.

News for February 14, 2011



David Thompson, 25, of La Junta was arrested on February 6, 2011 at about 9:00 a.m. at an address in the 18000 block of County Road EE.5 in Rocky Ford. Mr. Thompson was initially charged with harassment, criminal mischief under $500.00 and domestic violence. The Otero County Sheriff's Office received a call from a reporting party that there was a possible domestic in progress, and that the reporting party may have been pushed down and a hole allegedly punched in wall in the house. Deputy Mike Martin responded to the call. Deputy Martin spoke with the victim who stated that during the course of an argument she was pushed off of the bed and felt two hard hits to the back of her neck. It is alleged that David Thompson punched two holes in the wall of the bedroom. David Thompson was arrested at the scene and transported to the Otero County Jail without further incident.


Philip Reed of Fowler reported to the Otero County Sheriff's Office on February 6, 2011 that someone had broken a window at his residence located in the 600 block of Highway 50. The window being broken happened sometime between the 5th and the 6th of February. About ten dollars damage was reported to the window. Deputy Mike Martin responded.


On February 11, 2011, Mr. Roger Rivera of La Junta contacted Corporal Carol Coates to report that he might be the victim of identity theft. Mr. Rivera stated that he had received a report from his credit union showing some activity that was not related in any way to himself. The case is ongoing.

News for February 10, 2011

On February 1, 2011 Kassandra Rieke of La Junta reported that a 2005 Ford dually flatbed pickup had been taken from an address in the 32000 block of Highway 194 east of La Junta. The theft had occurred sometime between January 21, 2011 and February 1, 2011. Sgt. Mark Jackson responded to the call. As of this date, the vehicle is still missing.

Rumalda Juarez, 63, of Rocky Ford, Colorado received a summons and complaint on February 7, 2011 for littering of public property for an incident that occurred at about 11:00 a.m. on the same day. A person call the sheriff's office and stated that they observed a car on County Road 19.5 that they thought was broken down. As the reporting party got closer they noticed that the male was changing the oil to the car on the shoulder of the road. The reporting party noted the license plate number of the car which left leaving the used oil filter and used motor oil on the ground. A charge slip was found on the ground with a name. Deputy Adam McElroy contacted Mr. Juarez and issued the summons and complaint.

News for February 4, 2011

Calvin Henry Jones, 29, of Manteo, North Carolina and Joseph Michael Davies, 28, of Sacramento, California were arrested by the Otero County Sheriff's Office on January 25, 2011 at about 9:00 a.m. near the 30000 block of Highway 50 just outside the city limits of La Junta. Deputy Mike Martin who investigated, received a call of trespassers on a BNSF railroad train. Deputy Martin found the two men in a cab of a engine near the end of the train. They were arrested and transported to the Otero County Sheriff's Office without incident.


Martin Ray Gonzales, 24, of Swink, Colorado received a summons and complaint for speeding, no proof of insurance, and driving under restraint on January 29, 2011 at about 10:00 p.m. Deputy Adam McElroy who was on duty and on patrol on County Road 24.5 about a half a mile North of Highway 10 contacted Mr. Gonzales on the speeding.
